Shelfie FAQ

What’s a shelfie?

A shelfie is a photo of a bookshelf. When you add a shelf of books in the app, we’ll identify all of the books, and let you know which books are available as free or discounted ebooks or audiobooks.

Why did the app crash?

We’re sorry you had that experience! Please send us a note at [email protected]. If you can, include your device and the iOS or Android version it’s running. Bonus points if you remember what screen you were on when the app crashed. We love screenshots too.

I’ve taken a shelfie, how do I find out which are available as ebooks?

To find your available ebooks tap on Library and then the Ebooks tab on the top.

Why is my book not available as an ebook or audiobook through Shelfie?

We’re sorry we didn’t have your book. Shelfie works with publishers to offer you new ebooks and audiobooks every week. There are over 400,000 ebooks available in the app right now. You can expect ~20% of your library to be available as an ebook or audiobook.

We are constantly adding new books to Shelfie. We recommend you add all your books to your Library, so we can notify you as they become available.

Where can I find my audiobooks?

You can find your audiobooks in your Library under the Audiobooks tab on the top. If you purchased an audiobook and don’t see it there, pull down to refresh.

Why do I have to write my name in the book?

We ask that you write your name on the copyright page to prove ownership of your book. You can prove ownership for any book you bought anytime from anywhere, without a receipt.

Can I get a list of my books?

Yes! Tap Settings > Export Library to CSV. We’ll email you a list of all the books you’ve uploaded to your Library.

Can you send me a list of all the books available on Shelfie?

There are 400,000 ebooks available on Shelfie from almost 2,000 publishers. The easiest way for you to find your available titles is to add your books to the Shelfie app. Let us know if you need help at [email protected]

Why doesn’t the app work on my iPad?

Unfortunately, the iPad doesn’t have a flash yet. Shelfie requires the flash on your phone in order to make sure your photographs are as clear as possible. Any fuzziness or noise in your photo can interfere with the computer vision processes we use to indentify each of your books.

Do you have a desktop version of the app?

We do have a lightweight web version! View and share your shelfies at

For the best experience, please use the mobile app on iOS or Android. We need the flash on your phone so the app can see and identify the books in your shelfie.

What does Shelfie cost?

Shelfie is a free app. We offer both free and discounted ebooks and audiobooks.

Will Shelfie work in my country?

Shelfie currently works in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. We’re working on expanding our services, let us know if you want Shelfie where you are at [email protected].

Adding Books

Why did the app ignore some of the books on my shelf.

Shelfie uses advanced computer vision to scan your photo and identify book spines. Sometimes it misses a book because of lighting, blur, or how narrow a book is.

If we miss a book, you can still add it to your Library by searching for the title in the app and tapping +Owned. You can also scan the barcode on your book to add it to your Library.

Why didn’t Shelfie recognize the barcode on my book?

Sometimes we don’t have the ISBN (International Standard Book Number) for every edition of a book.

But don’t worry, you can still add your book to your Library by searching for the title in the app and tapping +Owned.

Shelfie identified my book incorrectly. How do I fix this?

If your book is identified incorrectly, go to your Shelfie page in the app, and tap Approve Your Books. Under the incorrectly identified book, tap Identify Book and type in the correct title in the box that pops up.

How does Shelfie identify books?

Shelfie uses computer vision to identify what books are on your shelf. We use your phone’s camera like an eye to first look for book spines then read the titles.

Do I need an eReader?

Absolutely not! You can read your ebook in the app, by tapping Read from your Library. Email [email protected] if you have any problems.

Can I read my book in the Shelfie app?

Yes! Any book you purchase in Shelfie, you can read right in the app. Just tap Read when you’re on the Ebook tab and the book will automatically open.

Why can’t I download my ebook?

If you’re having issues downloading your ebook, it might be protected with Adobe DRM. You can confirm this by checking if the extension on the file we sent you is .ACSM.

For ebooks with Adobe DRM, you need to register the book before opening it. To do this, use an ebook app that supports DRM. We recommend Bluefire or Adobe Digital Editions (both free). Download one of those apps, register for an Adobe ID then open the ASCM file with the app.

If you have any difficulty, don’t hesitate to email [email protected]. We’re here to help.

My download link expired. What can I do?

The download links are valid for 1 week or up to 5 clicks. Follow the instructions here to resend your link. You can also email us at [email protected] and we can send you a new one.

I’m getting an error when I try to open my ASCM file.

You need to use an app that supports Adobe DRM. We recommend using Bluefire or Adobe Digital Editions (both are free). If you’re still having difficulty, email us at [email protected]

When I click on the email link it says “Invalid URL.”

This usually means your link has expired. This happens one week after it’s been created or you’ve clicked on the link 5 times.

Follow these instructions to receive a new link. You can also email us at [email protected] and we’ll send you a new link.

How do I load my ebook onto my Kindle?

Kindle uses a different file format then all other ebook readers. In order to load your ebook onto your Kindle, make sure that you have received a MOBI file from us. If you have then follow the directions below. If not, email us at [email protected].

Drag ‘n’ Drop
When connected to your computer by USB, your Kindle will mount as a drive on your home screen. Drag and drop Mobi files from your local hard drive to the Kindle placing them in the documents folder.

You can email documents to your registered Kindle devices. To do this, you will need your Send-to-Kindle email address ([name], which is a unique email address assigned to each of your Kindle devices and free Kindle reading applications upon registration.

In order to find your Send-to-Kindle email address, visit the Manage your Devices page at Manage Your Kindle. You will only be able to send documents to your Kindle from approved email accounts that you add via your Personal Document Settings page at Manage Your Kindle.

Once you know your Kindle address, simply attach the ebook file to an email and hit send. You do not need to include a subject line.

For DRM-free ebooks, there is a free software called Calibre that allows you to convert other formats to a MOBI file. After downloading an ePUB, PDF, LIT or other format ebook to your computer, you can add the book to your computer’s Calibre library. Your Calibre library can be transferred to your Kindle by selecting the email to Kindle option from the drop-down menu.

Please contact us at [email protected] if you are having trouble.

How do I load ebooks onto my Kobo?

If you’re ebook has Adobe DRM applied, read here for Kobo’s instructions on loading a DRM ebook to your reader.
If you’re ebook does not have DRM applied, read here.

Please contact us at [email protected] if you are having trouble.
